Robert Wilson Exhibition at Venice Biennale 2026

The 2026 Venice Biennale Teatro will host "Viaggio attraverso cinque dimensioni. Robert Wilson alla Biennale di Venezia," an exhibition dedicated to the late Robert Wilson, who died in 2025. The show runs June 8–21, 2026, in the Sala delle Colonne of Ca' Giustinian, curated from materials in the Archivio Storico delle Arti Contemporanee (ASAC). Rather than a retrospective, it presents an immersive journey through Wilson's interdisciplinary practice, where light, time, space, and sound function as autonomous elements. Wilson, a Golden Lion winner for sculpture at the 1993 Venice Biennale, profoundly reshaped contemporary experimentation across theater, visual arts, music, and cinema. The exhibition includes posters, photographs, correspondence, sketches, full videos, and press articles from Wilson's Biennale appearances, such as "Einstein on the Beach" (1976 Biennale Teatro e Musica, directed by Luca Ronconi), the U.S. Pavilion installation for the 1980 Biennale Arte, "Gertrude Stein, Doctor Faustus Lights the Lights" (1992), "Memory/Loss" (1993 Biennale Arte, later a film by Roberto Andò at the 1994 Biennale Cinema), and Giada Colagrandi's documentary "Bob Wilson’s Life and Death of Marina Abramovic," plus an unpublished 1976 interview by Maude and Luciano Giaccari.
