River Electric Resort Blends Modernist Architecture with Nostalgic Design in California Wine Country

River Electric is a design-focused resort, swim club, and event venue located in Guerneville, California, within Sonoma County's Russian River Valley. The 12-acre property features meadows and redwood groves near the historic town. The project originated from Shelter Co., an event production studio known for creating immersive experiences, with the aim of establishing a permanent space combining design, hospitality, and community. Due to its location on a flood plain, the architecture prioritizes resilience through open-air concrete structures designed by Will Spurzem of Boundary Works Design. The buildings reference 1960s and 1970s California municipal architecture, incorporating elements from Italian beach clubs, mid-century Americana, and Northern California's 1970s counterculture. Interior details by Jessie Galloway Designs include striped fabrics in deep reds and blues, custom powder-coated door frames in olive and burgundy, and red light fixtures. Brand identity developed by Hannah Munce Studios features typography inspired by hand-painted lodge signage, block-print motifs, and a mascot named Sparky the River Rat. The project represents a movement in design-led hospitality that integrates local context while creating travel-worthy experiences.
