Rijeka Public Library Unveils Innovative Branding and Visual Identity Transformation

The Rijeka Public Library in Croatia has introduced a comprehensive rebranding and visual identity system coinciding with the opening of its new building. This project was developed by the design studio Cipmann, which created a distinctive identity centered around the library's acronym GK*R. The asterisk in the logo symbolizes the institution's openness to diverse content and evolving functions beyond traditional library services. The design extends to practical applications including signage and wayfinding systems that incorporate playful literary references and wordplay to enhance visitor navigation and engagement. A minimalist color palette was selected to ensure visibility within the vibrant library environment, with the asterisk motif consistently appearing as a key branding element. Despite facing budget limitations, the design team utilized cost-effective materials such as die-cut vinyl stickers to implement the visual system. Typography choices include IBM Plex Sans and Anybody typefaces to maintain readability and aesthetic harmony. Additional collaborators included Pictor d.o.o., which handled printing services. This rebranding effort represents a significant shift in how cultural institutions can use design to foster community interaction and expand their roles, positioning the Rijeka Public Library as a model for modern public spaces worldwide.
