Richard Avedon: Relationships Exhibition Opens at Palazzo Reale in Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-27

Over 100 photographs celebrate sixty years of Richard Avedon's career at Palazzo Reale in Milan, from September 22, 2022 to January 29, 2023. The exhibition, titled Richard Avedon: Relationships, explores the legacy of the New York-born photographer (1923–2004) known for his fashion photography in Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Elle, as well as his large-format black-and-white portraits of celebrities, artists, and activists. The show is divided into ten sections, contrasting early glamorous location shoots with later minimalist studio work. A dedicated section highlights Avedon's collaboration with Gianni Versace, spanning from the designer's debut spring/summer 1980 campaign to the spring/summer 1998 collection, the first by Donatella Versace. Portraits include Andy Warhol, Truman Capote, the Beatles, Michelangelo Antonioni, Allen Ginsberg, Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe, and the Dalai Lama. Works come from the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson and the Richard Avedon Foundation.
