Rice Husk House: Summary's Prefab Panels Turn Agricultural Waste into Architecture
Porto-based architecture studio Summary, led by Samuel Gonçalves, completed the Rice Husk House in Esmoriz, Portugal, using prefabricated panels made from discarded rice husks. The L-shaped structure uses a three-dimensional modular system of reinforced concrete panels with a 23-centimetre-thick cement-based composite outer layer incorporating rice husks sourced from a local producer. The material, originally developed for traffic acoustic barriers, provides thermal resistance of 1.877 m²K/W, eliminating the need for EPS or XPS foam insulation. The house promotes natural cross-ventilation and optimal solar exposure.
