Review of a New Musical Exploring Trans Identity in the Digital Age

A new musical titled 'A Transgender Woman on the Internet, Crying' has premiered at the Old Fitz Theatre in Sydney, presented by the Green Door Theatre Company. Created by Cassie Hamilton, who also stars as the lead character Avis, the production examines the life of a transgender influencer navigating online validation, romance, and public scrutiny. The show incorporates hyperpop and drum-and-bass music, with choreography by Dan Ham and musical direction by Lillian Hearne, aiming to subvert traditional rom-com musical formats with a queer perspective. It was developed through ATYP's Fresh Ink program and previously workshopped at the Rebel Theatre. The review notes that while the musical offers bold, youthful energy and clever elements like grungy set design by Ruby Jenkins and strong performances from actors such as Teo Vergara and Rosie Rai, it faces challenges in translating internet culture to the stage, with risks of feeling dated due to niche references. The plot follows farcical rhythms and archetypal characters, with some dialogue perceived as overly explicit. Despite execution flaws, the production is praised for its dark, playful approach and for centering trans experiences amid external pressures. The show runs until April 11 and is part of ArtsHub's Creative Journalism Fellowship, supported by the NSW Government through Create NSW.
