Remembering Giraffes Photo Book Raises Conservation Funds and Awareness
Photographer Margot Raggett MBE has released Remembering Giraffes, the 11th volume in her Remembering Wildlife photo book series, on October 12. The book compiles donated images from wildlife photographers including Jonathan & Angela Scott, Marsel van Oosten, Frans Lanting, and Greg du Toit, aiming to highlight the challenges facing the four distinct giraffe species and raise funds for their protection. Raggett notes that giraffe populations have declined by up to 40% since 1985 due to habitat loss, fragmentation, agriculture, fences, roads, human settlement, bushmeat hunting, and political instability. Notable photographs include Charlie Hamilton James's image of a drought victim in Amboseli National Park, Kenya, and Ollivier Girard's depiction of West African giraffes being relocated under military escort 800 kilometers to a reserve in Niger. Raggett was inspired to create the series after witnessing a poached elephant in Kenya. Since Remembering Elephants launched in 2016, the series has sold over 62,000 books globally, donated more than £1.28 million (almost $1.7 million) to 86 projects across 36 countries, and involved 316 photographers. In an interview, Raggett discusses turning anger into action, her evolving understanding of conservation, and her hope that the book encourages people to appreciate giraffes' beauty and fragility. Remembering Giraffes is available on the Remembering Wildlife website.
