Reinier de Graaf Publishes Critical Manifesto on Architecture's Future

Architect Reinier de Graaf, a partner at OMA, has released a new book titled 'Architecture Against Architecture: A Manifesto' through Verso. The work offers a direct critique of the architecture profession, addressing issues such as the culture of 'starchitects,' AI, intellectual property, sustainability, and power dynamics. De Graaf structures the book into two main sections: one focusing on architects themselves and the other on the industry as a whole. He presents a series of provocative recommendations, including ending the focus on figureheads, welcoming labor unions, collectivizing practice, relying on AI for taste, and adapting to climate change rather than claiming to mitigate it. In an interview with Wallpaper*, de Graaf explained that he wrote the book because he believes the profession is in deep trouble and risks losing its agency within a decade if not confronted. He described the book as an introspection and a manifesto, reacting to feedback from his previous works, which were criticized for not offering solutions. De Graaf noted that the initial title was 'Elephants in the Room,' aiming to address topics architects often avoid. He emphasized that the book is not a cynical dismissal but a call for solidarity and normal conditions in an industry he views as unmodern. The architect also highlighted challenging chapters on power, morality, and sustainability, suggesting these themes might be expanded in future writings. The book is intended primarily for architects but uses architecture as a lens to discuss broader global issues.
