Rei Mitsui Architects completes ground-hugging weekend retreat in Karuizawa forest

Rei Mitsui Architects has completed Casa de fin de semana Tull, a 101-square-meter weekend retreat in 2024. Located in Karuizawa, Japan, the project was led by architect Rei Mitsui with team leader Ryosuke Hara. The design prioritizes immersion in nature over mountain views, placing the residence close to the forest floor rather than on elevated slopes. General contractor Daiichi Kensetsu Co., Ltd. executed the build, with structural engineering by Ryotaro Sakata Structural Engineers. Photography was handled by Yoichi Onoda and Jérémie Souteyrat. The project features specific material selections including Kitayama-sugi Japanese red cedar for the post and beam structure, a solid stainless steel kitchen countertop from MATSUOKA, and dining room lighting from FOSCARINI. Curated by Miwa Negoro, the house is situated within a mountainous forest setting.
