Red Bamba Rooftop Project in Veracruz Blends Local Identity with Contemporary Design

The Red Bamba project, featured in Glocal Design Magazine's 87th edition highlighting notable Mexican architecture and interior design works from 2025, transforms a rooftop in Veracruz's historic center into a vibrant social space. Designed by Zona Design MX, this intervention creates a contemporary rooftop environment that actively engages with local cultural identity through color, materials, and spatial organization. The design employs red as a dominant architectural element, drawing inspiration from traditional Veracruz attire and the urban environment's chromatic intensity, complemented by pink terrazo reinterpreted from Mercado Zaragoza and floors with offset polka dots evoking rhythm and movement. Furniture specifically created by Zona Design MX structures the space without obstructing views toward the historic center's domes, which serve as a backdrop. Curved lines and low-height volumes create fluid circulation patterns that encourage prolonged stays. The semicircular bar, clad in terrazo, functions as a central social hub, while natural fibers, wood, and soft-toned textiles provide tactile contrast to the bold color scheme. The project incorporates cultural references through details like ironwork based on INAH catalogs and woven bases reminiscent of traditional instruments. Red Bamba represents more than a terrace—it operates as a meeting point that synthesizes historical Veracruz cultural elements, materials, and construction techniques into a contemporary architectural statement, demonstrating how regional identity can inform modern design approaches.
