Record Industry Proposes AI Labels for Music, Similar to Parental Advisory Stickers

The Recording Industry Association of America, along with the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, has introduced a new labeling system for music produced by AI. An "AI" label in uppercase will denote music that is "AI-generated," whereas "ai" in lowercase will indicate "AI-assisted" music. This initiative seeks to safeguard human artists and provide clarity to listeners regarding the involvement of AI in music creation. In April, Deezer noted that 44% of new uploads were generated by AI, equating to approximately 75,000 tracks each day. Apple Music suggested that over a third of new releases were AI-created. Although AI music constitutes less than 1% of total listening, some tracks have attracted significant mainstream interest, leading to concerns about revenue. Recent issues include an AI-generated rendition of "Like a Prayer" and fake music versions on Spotify.
