Rebel Wilson's directorial debut The Deb premieres as Australian teen musical

Rebel Wilson makes her directorial debut with The Deb, a teen musical film opening in Australian cinemas on 9 April. Adapted from Hannah Reilly and Meg Washington's 2022 stage production for Australian Theatre for Young People, the film follows Sydneysider Maeve Simpkins, played by Charlotte MacInnes, who is sent to the fictional outback town of Dunburn after a social media scandal. There she encounters her cousin Taylah, portrayed by Natalie Abbott, who dreams of the local debutante ball. The film draws inspiration from classic teen musicals like Grease, High School Musical, and Hairspray, as well as iconic Australian films including Strictly Ballroom, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, and Muriel's Wedding. Wilson appears on screen in a supporting comic role as Annabelle's mum, while also demonstrating energetic direction.
