Ravyn Lenae's 'Blue Island': A Genre-Defying Third Album

Ravyn Lenae's third album, 'Blue Island,' opens with a series of percussive bangs leading into the lead single 'Handle,' a guitar-led pop-rock track with an anthemic chorus. The album, named after her hometown in Illinois, follows her 2024 breakthrough 'Bird's Eye,' which included the viral hit 'Love Me Not' and a tour with Sabrina Carpenter. 'Never Let Me Go' pays tribute to Chicago soul and doo-wop, featuring a recording of her grandparents. Lenae addresses criticism about being pigeonholed as a Black artist, emphasizing that rock, pop, and dance music have roots in Black communities. She also discusses working with movement director Akira Uchida for choreography, a first for her, and fashion inspiration from Donyale Luna.
