Ravi Handa Designs Forest-Integrated Residence in Quebec Using Animal Trails as Guide

Ravi Handa, an architect based in Montreal, has completed Maison du Lac Perdu, a single-story home in Wentworth-Nord, Quebec. The residence was developed by RHA, the firm Handa leads, following extensive on-site observation of the Laurentian forest environment. Rather than beginning with conventional plans, Handa spent nights at the location to study natural patterns like sunlight and wind, identifying a plateau revealed by wildlife paths. This informed the placement of two rectangular volumes that are slightly offset from one another, creating a sculptural form that encourages movement around the structure. The building sits near an escarpment, partially hidden by trees, to blend with the woods. Exterior wood siding echoes the vertical lines of mature trees, while the interior emphasizes minimalism with white walls, wood ceilings, and concrete floors. Light is carefully managed through clerestory windows and strategic openings, avoiding excessive glazing to maintain a cool, contemplative atmosphere. A central axis connects the volumes and directs views toward the lake, focusing on nearby textures rather than distant panoramas. The design prioritizes durability and high-performance systems for Quebec's climate, concealing technical elements to reduce distractions. The project reflects a growing trend in Canadian architecture that seeks harmony with natural settings, joining other works like Chalet du Ruisseau and Perchée House in valuing vernacular authenticity.
