Rare Stiehl box and Van Huysum paintings lead June auctions

June auctions feature a rare gold-mounted steinkabinett box by Christian Gottlieb Stiehl from the collection of Maurice Tempelsman, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis's final companion, estimated at $600,000–$800,000 at Sotheby's New York on 24 June. The box, one of only ten recorded examples, has not been publicly seen since 1906 and features zellenmosaik inlay with a concealed compartment containing a handwritten booklet. At Christie's London on 30 June, two Jan van Huysum still lifes—Flowers in a Terracotta Vase (1734) and Fruit and flowers in a wicker basket (1720s)—each estimated at around £3m, will be offered as separate lots in the Old Masters Evening Sale. The paintings have been a pair since the 19th century when Baron Lionel Nathan de Rothschild commissioned matching frames, and their provenance includes Willem II of the Netherlands. Diane Keaton's collection sale at Bonhams New York on 8 June includes Maynard Dixon's Train on the Desert (1941), estimated at $20,000–$40,000, alongside furnishings, wardrobe, and her Annie Hall script. At Phillips New York on 12 June, William Morris's Hanging Petroglyph (1993), estimated at $15,000–$20,000, comes from the estate of Tina Hills, a Miami media mogul. Morris, who trained under Dale Chihuly at Pilchuck Glass School, created the piece using colored glass powders on heated steel plates with artist Jon Ormbrek.
