Rachel Hayes Brings Patchwork Textiles to Nomad Hamptons at Watermill Center
From June 25 to 28, artist Rachel Hayes showcased her large-scale patchwork textiles at New York's Watermill Center during the inaugural U.S. edition of the art and design fair Nomad. These vibrant, sewn pieces hung between trees along a gravel path, gently swaying in the coastal breeze and drawing inspiration from 1960s hard-edge painting as well as Korean pojagi quilting. For Nomad Hamptons, Hayes also designed oversized picnic blankets in collaboration with Giorgio Armani, perfect for lounging and enjoying snacks. Based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, she focuses on fabric installations that enhance both architectural and natural spaces. Currently, she is working on a permanent project for a South Dakota airport, featuring textiles in 56 colors that will interact with the changing light throughout the day. Hayes has previously exhibited at White Sands National Park in New Mexico, which led to her partnership with Armani. Influences on her work include Sonia Delaunay and Alexander Girard.
