R. Sikoryak's Comics Mashup of Declaration and Emancipation

publication · 2026-06-26

Cartoonist R. Sikoryak, known for adapting the iTunes Terms and Conditions into comics, has released 'Declaration / Emancipation Illustrated' (Drawn & Quarterly) on June 30, 2026, ahead of the US 250th anniversary. The book word-for-word remixes the Declaration of Independence, Emancipation Proclamation, and Gettysburg Address with art styles of over 100 American cartoonists from 1905 to the 2020s. It follows his 2020 'Constitution Illustrated' and avoids repeating artists from that volume. Sikoryak did not seek permissions, citing fair use, and aimed for bipartisan appeal by including diverse characters like Mickey Mouse and Mallard Fillmore. The project took longer than expected, originally slated for 2024, but expanded to include the Emancipation section. Sikoryak emphasizes he did not alter the original texts, using artwork to comment on problematic passages such as 'merciless Indian savages.'
