Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration Opens in London as World's Largest Illustration Space

On June 5, 2026, the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration opened in London's Clerkenwell district, within the renovated New River Head pumping station. It is the largest space in the world dedicated entirely to illustration and the only UK nonprofit devoted to promoting this art form. The centre is the culmination of a 20-year dream of Sir Quentin Blake, the 93-year-old illustrator known for his work on Roald Dahl's books, including 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and 'Matilda'. The £12.5 million renovation was funded by public and private partners, including the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The centre features three galleries, a public library, gardens, workshops, a shop, and a café-restaurant decorated with a Blake mural. Access is free except for temporary exhibitions. Three opening exhibitions are on view: 'Quentin Blake: Performance' (until April 1, 2027), showcasing over 100 works exploring theatre, circus, and music-hall influences; 'MURUGIAH: Ever Feel Like…' (until October 4, 2026), featuring psychedelic art by British-Sri Lankan artist Murugiah; and 'Queer as Comics', tracing LGBTQIA+ representation in comics since the 1940s. The centre also hosts workshops, readings, festivals, and participatory projects.
