Qualcomm Unveils Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Camera Pipeline with Intelligent Pixel Control and On-Device C2PA Provenance

ai-technology · 2026-09-22

At the Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui, Qualcomm unveiled two new processors: the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Both are built using a cutting-edge 2-nanometer process. They feature Intelligent Pixel Control for better scene recognition and boost the image signal processor's bit depth from 8 to 16 bits, enabling real-time adjustments. The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 also includes the Elite Color Engine and Motion Intelligence. Qualcomm has enhanced its zero-shutter-lag technology to support three 64-megapixel sensors with the Spectra ISP offering a triple 20-bit dynamic range. The Xiaomi 18 Series will be the first in China to use these chips, with the Motorola Signature 27 expected in Q4 2026. Heape emphasized the need for on-device signing for provenance instead of relying on cloud solutions.

Key facts

  • Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 at Snapdragon Summit 2026 in Maui.
  • Both chips are built on a 2-nanometer process.
  • Intelligent Pixel Control recognizes and tunes scene elements like faces, hair, sky, grass, and fabric pixel by pixel.
  • The ISP bit depth doubles from 8 to 16 bits, with metadata generated by the NPU, but file sizes do not increase.
  • The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 includes Intelligent Pixel Control, Elite Color Engine, and Motion Intelligence.
  • Zero-shutter-lag support expands from three 48-megapixel sensors to three 64-megapixel sensors.
  • The Spectra ISP offers triple 20-bit dynamic range, described by Heape as the most dynamic range of any mobile ISP.
  • A new Bayer-level noise reduction block, Bayer Massive Multi-Frame Noise Reduction with AI, is exclusive to Gen 6 hardware.
  • Qualcomm’s C2PA provenance system runs on-device using Truepic’s media library, contrasting with Apple’s cloud-based approach.
  • The Xiaomi 18 Series is the first to launch with the new chips, currently only in China.
  • The Motorola Signature 27 is expected in Q4 2026 and may support 8K/60fps video.
