Proof of Concept's 'Mould' Exhibition Reveals Hidden Realities of Design Manufacturing

The third exhibition of Proof of Concept, titled 'Mould', is on display at Aram's Covent Garden gallery in London until 18 April 2026. This showcase features twelve designers and studios, emphasizing the complex, costly, and iterative nature of object creation rather than merely showcasing finished items. Established in 2024 by David Irwin, SmithMatthias, and Atelier Thirty Four, Proof of Concept seeks to reveal the true nature of innovation within design culture. Notable participants include Alt Studios with their micro-concrete cast, and Martina Claesson with her blown glass vessels. Co-founder Gemma Matthias notes that moulding is essential to object creation, often involving expensive tooling that hinders production. The exhibition highlights the necessity of understanding manufacturing processes, particularly in an era dominated by AI-generated designs and global supply chains.
