Producer Niika Daria on Finding an Audience for 'What About Sal?' After the Film Is Finished
Niika Daria, producer of the Australian feature What About Sal?, argues that finishing a film is only the start of the work. The film, centred on Gerard O'Dwyer, an actor with Down syndrome, follows Sal as he searches for the rock-singer father he has never met while his mother is dying of cancer. It had a cinema run and later reached Netflix's Top 10 in Australia and New Zealand, and is also streaming on Prime Video. Daria recalls calling cinemas, journalists and contacts herself, with her team handling outreach and follow-ups, and says screenings and Q&As were central to building word of mouth. Disability organisations helped the film reach audiences, she notes. She urges filmmakers to describe their film in a single sentence, choose a release path by asking what the film needs first — a buyer, audience, reviews or word of mouth — and establish early who will do the release work, pressing any partner on which cinemas they will approach and who handles publicity. Rejection, whether a polite pass or silence, should not be overread, she adds. Daria co-leads Bruce and Pablo Pictures and previously served as Head of Acquisitions for Alan Finney OAM.
