Primitive Star Discovery in Dwarf Galaxy Offers Glimpse of Early Universe's Chemical Evolution
Astronomers have identified an exceptionally ancient star within the Pictor II dwarf galaxy, located approximately 150,000 light-years from Earth. The star, designated PicII-503, was initially observed in 2024 using the Víctor M. Blanco Telescope in Chile. Researchers published their findings on March 16 in the journal Nature Astronomy. The star's chemical composition, characterized by low levels of iron and calcium alongside elevated carbon, suggests it formed from material ejected by the universe's very first stars. This makes PicII-503 a likely member of the second stellar generation. The discovery supports the hypothesis that early, low-energy supernovae expelled lighter elements like carbon while retaining heavier ones, seeding subsequent star formation. Lead author Anirudh Chiti, an astrophysicist at Stanford University, noted the significance of observing such primordial element production. The star was found in the Milky Way's halo, a region populated by old stars that may have originated from merged dwarf galaxies. Anna Frebel, an MIT astrophysicist not involved in the study, emphasized the rarity of such finds. Chris Davis of the National Science Foundation's NOIRLab, which supported the research, described the discovery as a form of cosmic archaeology. This marks the first clear identification of a second-generation star within an ultrafaint dwarf galaxy, validating theories about early stellar evolution.
