The research examined almost 30,000 grants issued between 1925 and 2025, identifying Harvard, University of California–Berkeley, Columbia, Stanford, and Yale as the leading institutions. Notably, from 2000 to 2025, NYU and Princeton supplanted Berkeley and Yale. Approximately 75% of fellowship recipients were affiliated with US universities at the time of their initial award. Since 1925, the Guggenheim Foundation has conferred over 21,000 fellowships, maintaining an annual distribution of 170-200 after reaching a high of nearly 400 in 1972. Sociologist Michèle Lamont noted that peer reviewers tend to favor elite candidates, perpetuating cycles that disadvantage those from under-resourced schools.
