Pop-up Gallery Genova Brings International Contemporary Art to Historic Palaces

The Pop-up Gallery Genova initiative has launched in Genoa, Italy, placing contemporary artworks within historic private palaces in the city's dense historic center. The project invites international contemporary art galleries to intervene in these spaces, creating connections between historical settings and current artistic practices. The first participating gallery is Ciaccia Levi, based in Paris, which presented works by four artists in the noble floor of Palazzo Gio Batta Grimaldi. The artists featured are Zoe Williams, Ibuki Inoue, Francesco Gennari, and Kenny Dunkan. Williams contributes material-based sculptures blending ancient symbolism with sci-fi elements; Inoue presents delicate, ethereal drawings; Gennari offers poetic works balancing lightness and emotional resonance; and Dunkan employs a political language manifesting in sculpture, text, and declamation, notably in the work 'THANKS TO THAT!, 2026'. The project aims to activate dialogue between contemporary art and Baroque decorations, enriching historical interpretation. It emerges against a backdrop of challenges for Genoa's contemporary art scene, including the closure of its sole contemporary museum, Villa Croce. Recent developments, such as Ilaria Bonacossa's appointment as director of Palazzo Ducale and this pop-up initiative, signal potential change. The effort involves academic support, notably from culture assessor Giacomo Montanari, and seeks to foster a renewed contemporary circuit by inviting international galleries and creating urban networks outside museum pathways. The project hopes to transform Genoa back into an experimental and creative hub, as it was in the 1960s, by educating public sensitivity toward new art while engaging with the city's architectural heritage.
