Pompeii Archaeological Park Unveils Permanent Display of Vesuvius Victim Casts

Pompeii Archaeological Park has opened a permanent exhibition featuring over twenty plaster casts of individuals who perished during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 CE. The display is housed within the Palestra Grande at the archaeological site. These casts were created using a technique pioneered in 1863 by archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli, which involves filling the cavities left by decomposed bodies in the volcanic ash with plaster. This process captures precise physical imprints, documenting postures, gestures, and even details of clothing from the victims' final moments. The exhibition presents figures in various states: some crouched, others with raised hands, and one notable grouping of an adult and child together. Contextual information accompanies each cast, detailing discovery locations and nearby artifacts. Modern scientific analysis of the casts provides data on age, health, and diet, offering insights into daily life in Pompeii. The eruption occurred in phases, beginning with falling pumice that trapped people indoors, followed by lethal pyroclastic flows. The installation aims to foster a connection with the individuals affected by the disaster, moving beyond spectacle to create an empathetic historical record.
