Podcast Episode Explores Djibril Diop Mambéty's Films on Senegal's Marginalized

The sixth installment of the RFI podcast series 'Cinéastes d’Afrique' centers on the work of Senegalese director Djibril Diop Mambéty (1945–1998), particularly his last two films, 'Le Franc' (1995) and 'La Petite vendeuse de soleil' (1998). This episode includes archival footage and discussions with Fanta Sylla, Catherine Ruelle, Djiby Kebe, Wasis Diop, and Alain Gomis, examining Mambéty's commentary on economic disparity in post-colonial Senegal. It also reflects on his 1973 film 'Touki Bouki,' which received a negative reception, contributing to his depression. Following 'Hyènes' (1992), Mambéty embarked on a trilogy addressing Dakar's marginalized communities. He passed away in July 1998, just before filming concluded; Silvia Voser and Wasis Diop finished the project. The series is produced by RFI and the Cinémathèque Afrique.
