Pinacoteca São Paulo Exhibition Reinterprets Modernist Classic Through Indigenous Perspectives

The Pinacoteca de São Paulo presents 'Macunaíma é Duwid,' an exhibition opening March 28 that critically reexamines Mário de Andrade's modernist novel 'Macunaíma' from contemporary Indigenous viewpoints. Curated by artist and activist Gustavo Caboco, the show runs through September 13, 2026, at the Pina Estação building, featuring approximately 100 artworks and documents. The exhibition connects the literary figure to the entity Duwid from northern Brazilian Indigenous cosmologies, involving peoples such as the Wapichana and Makuxi. It includes three thematic sections: one with works by artists like Carybé and Lasar Segall alongside historical materials; another examining cultural imposition; and a final section with new collaborative works from the Ajuri study group, including contributions from Denilson Baniwa. The presentation aims to shift narrative authority and address issues of identity, memory, and environmental rights.
