institutional · 2026-10-05

Philanthropist Sukumar Nagendran has generously donated $5 million to the Phoenix Art Museum in Arizona to enhance its Asian art galleries, particularly emphasizing Sri Lankan art. This initiative will expand the Art of Asia galleries from 6,000 square feet to 10,000 square feet, introducing a new 2,000-square-foot Nagendran Gallery. Nagendran's goal is to foster cultural appreciation and safeguard Sri Lankan artistic heritage. The museum boasts a collection of over 21,000 artworks, with notable contributions from Coleene and Barry Fernando. The Nagendran Gallery is set to debut in November, featuring the exhibition "Pala Pothupitiye: Mapping a Sri Lankan Consciousness," which will showcase the works of Sri Lankan artist Pothupitiye alongside historical pieces from the museum's collection.
