Phillips London Editions Week Totals £5.3 Million with 26 World Auction Records
Phillips generated over £5.3 million (about $7.1 million) and set 26 world auction records during its London editions week, held September 17–22 across four sales. The Modernism Sale opened the programme at £725,000, nearly double its pre-sale estimate, with 42 of 44 lots sold (95% by lot, 97% by value) and six world records for editioned works by Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Marc Chagall. Picasso's Le déjeuner sur l'herbe, d'après Manet I fetched £180,600, while Matisse's La nageuse dans l'aquarium made £28,300, a new auction benchmark for that edition. The Editions Evening Sale followed with £2 million total, selling 59 of 67 lots at 96% by value. Andy Warhol's Mickey Mouse topped the session at £193,500 (around $259,000), ahead of Roy Lichtenstein's Reflections on Crash at £154,800 and Jonas Wood's Four Majors at £116,100; new editions records were set for Lucio Fontana, Bridget Riley and Yoshitomo Nara. A separate fifth annual Hockney sale, held in the year of the artist's death, also reached £2 million, with 75 of 77 lots sold (97% by lot, 99% by value) and 14 world auction records. Its top lot, Autour de la maison, été (Around the House, Summer) from 2019 — described as the largest editioned print of Hockney's career — sold for £193,500, while An Image of Gregory and Tyler Dining Room, both from the Moving Focus series, each brought £141,900. The results precede the autumn market season, which shifts focus from London to Paris.
