Phillips Auction House to Present Duchamp & Company Sale in New York

Phillips auction house has organized a specialized sale titled DUCHAMP & COMPANY, focusing on the lasting impact of Marcel Duchamp. Curated by Francis M. Naumann, the event will feature more than one hundred artworks that illustrate Duchamp's influence on subsequent artists. The auction will be held in New York on April 23, 2026, with a public preview exhibition running from April 16 to 22 at 432 Park Avenue. The sale includes pieces by Duchamp alongside works by other notable figures such as Man Ray, Robert Rauschenberg, Sherrie Levine, John Baldessari, and Joseph Kosuth. Key items in the auction comprise Duchamp's 'La Boîte-en-valise, série F' from 1966, estimated between $350,000 and $450,000, and a 1937 reproduction of 'Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2' with an estimate of $80,000 to $100,000. Phillips executives Kelly Troester and Cary Leibowitz noted that the sale honors Duchamp's transformative effect on concepts of art and authorship, coinciding with increased museum focus on his work, including a forthcoming show at The Museum of Modern Art. The auction's title references a historical phrase used by Alfred Stieglitz, now applied to a broader artistic dialogue stemming from Duchamp's redefinition of creative authority. This event is presented alongside Phillips' regular Editions & Works on Paper and Modernism sales, offering a comprehensive examination of Duchamp's legacy through a curated selection of works that engage with his innovative approaches.
