Philippe Geluck Acquires Ixelles Building for Musée du Chat, Opening 2028

institutional · 2026-07-09

Philippe Geluck, along with his foundation, has acquired a historic structure located at 141-145 chaussée de Wavre in Ixelles, Belgium, where the Musée du Chat is set to debut in 2028. This site, previously the Demeuldre-Coché earthenware factory established in 1830, boasts a colorful ceramic facade and provides 2,300 m² for exhibitions. The architecture firm Francis Metzger will oversee its restoration. Initially conceived in 2008 and originally intended for Mont des Arts, the museum's launch was postponed due to escalating costs. Now titled "Le Musée du Chat et l'art rigolo," it will showcase thematic exhibitions alongside Geluck's personal collection. The project has stirred controversy, particularly following the Brussels Parliament's 2023 acquisition of a Cat sculpture for €370,000.
