Phaidon's 'Another View' Spotlights Studios of 20 Contemporary Black Artists

Phaidon is publishing 'Another View: The Vibrant World of Contemporary Black Artists,' a volume that opens the studio doors of 20 prominent artists. Featured figures include Nick Cave, Nina Chanel Abney, Hank Willis Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems, Kerry James Marshall, Theaster Gates, Derrick Adams, and Mickalene Thomas. The book runs nearly 200 pages and contains 150 never-before-seen photographs, exclusive interviews, and profiles. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the literary critic, filmmaker, and professor, wrote the introduction, which Phaidon says examines the historical precedents and critical context behind the current moment of Black contemporary art in America. Studio photographs place Hank Willis Thomas and Derrick Adams in Brooklyn, Theaster Gates in Chicago, and Mickalene Thomas in Brooklyn, while Carrie Mae Weems' Brooklyn studio is shown with proof prints from her Blues & Pinks series (2020). The release date is October 28. Copies can be pre-ordered through the Colossal Shop.
