Phaidon publishes 'Jardines contemporáneos' survey of 300 gardens
Phaidon has released 'Jardines contemporáneos', a book celebrating 300 of the world's most innovative contemporary gardens. Curated by Sorrel Everton, former deputy editor of Gardens Illustrated, and Phaidon editor Victoria Clarke, the volume features work by designers such as Piet Oudolf, Sarah Price, Terremoto, and Reed Hilderbrand. An international panel of horticulture experts—including Richard Aitken, Michael McCoy, Paul B. Redman, and Annie Guilfoyle—reviewed the selection. Guilfoyle, a Silver Medal winner at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, also wrote the introduction. The book is organized alphabetically by designer or studio and covers styles from naturalistic to minimalist, urban to edible. Projects range from the Bosco Verticale in Milan by Boeri Studio to the High Line in New York, and from a floating garden over a parking lot in Buenos Aires to a rooftop farm in Brooklyn producing over 70,000 pounds of organic food annually. Other featured gardens include Les Jardins d'Étretat in France, originally created for actress Madame Thébault and painted by Claude Monet, and the Hill of the Buddha in Japan, designed with Tadao Ando and 150,000 lavender plants. The book spans from the late 1990s to the present, emphasizing sustainability, conservation, and well-being. Designed by Melanie Mues, it includes explanatory texts for each entry.
