People's Architecture Office unveils Curly Cube installation along Shanghai's Huangpu River

In 2023, the People's Architecture Office finalized the Curly Cube, a modular public art piece located in a park along the Huangpu River in Shanghai. This installation reimagines public areas as lively social centers, featuring a smooth, curvilinear shape made from tensile membranes over lightweight frames measuring 2 meters square. Lead architects He Zhe, James Shen, and Zang Feng, with curation by Han Shuang, designed the project. Drawing from the Gyroid minimal surface, the design ensures both visual fluidity and material efficiency. Construction was managed by Shanghai Xuben Construction Engineering Co., Ltd., with structural advice from Beijing Shouan Architectural Structure Studio and Liu Su. Lighting was designed by Pang Lei, and the team included Guo Mingran, Zhang Meng, and Yao Ruojin. The client for this temporary artwork was West Bund and Serge Ferrari.
