Pend Architects Completes Tadao Ando-Inspired Mews Houses in Edinburgh's Canonmills

Pend Architects has completed Canon Mews, a pair of contemporary three-bedroom homes in Edinburgh's Canonmills neighborhood. This marks the architecture firm's first development project, transforming a constrained brownfield site into two design-led residences. Director Jamie Anderson cited Japanese architect Tadao Ando's Row House in Osaka as inspiration for opening up tight urban spaces through internal courtyards. The project faced initial planning refusal before unanimous approval on appeal, requiring collaboration with local contractor Gloss Projects as a joint venture. The design focuses on creating a sanctuary within the city, employing courtyards and terraces to bring daylight deep into the homes while balancing privacy. Materials include reclaimed brick from the site and red zinc cladding, creating visual cohesion with the existing fabric. Interior spaces feature porcelain tile flooring, solid timber staircases with custom metal balustrades, and roof terraces. The entrance detailing incorporates bullnose bricks found on site, a tribute to late colleague Andrew Gillespie who contributed early sketches. The development targets discerning buyers seeking longevity and thoughtful design in urban living.
