Pedro Torres Exhibition 'Palpita' Transforms Gravitational Waves into Sensory Experience at Rome Gallery

Artist Pedro Torres has opened a new exhibition titled 'Palpita' at AlbumArte, an independent contemporary art center in Rome. The exhibition, curated by Carolina Ciuti, explores gravitational waves through an artistic lens, creating a poetic and sensory experience. Torres, born in 1982 in Gloria de Dourados, Brazil, investigates intersections between scientific inquiry and poetic sensibility, with particular focus on time as a complex dimension. The exhibition runs until May 13 and was developed with support from Institut Ramon Llull and the European Gravitational Observatory (EGO), in collaboration with the Real Academia de España en Roma and AlbumArte. The project emerged from Torres's interest in interferometry and dialogue with researchers at the Cascina Observatory near Pisa, which houses the Virgo gravitational wave detector. The site-specific installation employs various media including video, sound, sculpture, and collage to create an environment where light, sound, and material construct perceptual shifts. Works are arranged in a constellation without a center, exploring perception limits and bodily awareness in space. Specific pieces include the titular 'Palpita' installation using technical materials like fiberglass from gravitational observatories, lasers, and mirrors, and 'La imposibilidad de la forma: el presente,' a series of clay spheres whose final forms are determined by atmospheric conditions. The exhibition connects cosmic time with Rome's archaeological history, suggesting fragility extends beyond the past. Torres has previously exhibited internationally, including at the Real Academia de España en Rome with 'Fisura' in 2024, and participated in exhibitions across Europe and Latin America. Curator Carolina Ciuti, previously director of LOOP Barcelona Festival until 2022, shares Torres's interest in temporal concepts across cultural, political, economic, and social perspectives, having collaborated on previous projects including 'Clathratus' at Spazio Volta in Bergamo.
