Paul P. Presents Fifth Solo Show at Maureen Paley

Maureen Paley gallery in London is hosting 'The Fugitive Marvels of Sunset,' the fifth solo exhibition by Canadian artist Paul P. The show features his signature head-and-shoulders portraits of anonymous young men, sourced from gay erotic magazines from the late 1960s to early 1980s. This period spans from the dawn of gay liberation to the onset of the AIDS crisis. By cropping the source images, P. redirects focus from eroticism to the subjects' expressions of youthful reticence and self-awareness. He cites influences such as Whistler, Sargent, Montesquiou, and Proust, aiming to capture the atmosphere of queer physicality from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The exhibition continues his 25-year exploration of queer identity and historical representation.
