Patricia Urquiola Designs Maya Residences in Swiss Alps

Designer Patricia Urquiola has completed the Maya Residences project in Andermatt, Switzerland, marking a significant architectural intervention in the Alpine region. The development consists of 17 residences and penthouses that Urquiola has transformed through interior design, moving away from traditional heavy Alpine aesthetics toward a lighter, more tactile approach. Urquiola, who founded Studio Urquiola in 2001 with partner Alberto Zontone, preserved the existing architectural structures while introducing refined interiors featuring light oak herringbone floors, green Salvan stone fireplaces, and bespoke furniture that functions sculpturally. The design emphasizes continuity between interior and exterior spaces through curved floor-to-ceiling glass loggias that frame mountain views, creating seasonal adaptability. Located in Central Switzerland's largest ski region, Andermatt has evolved from a military base to a year-round destination accessible from Zurich and Milan. The project includes shared amenities such as a wellness space with Palissade chaise lounges, a gym with panoramic windows, and access to IGNIV Andermatt, Andreas Caminada's two Michelin-starred restaurant. Urquiola's work has been exhibited internationally at institutions including MoMA, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Vitra Design Museum, reflecting her focus on material research and spatial sensitivity. The Maya Residences represent a design-forward approach to Alpine living that prioritizes clarity, materiality, and integration with the landscape.
