Paris Exhibition Traces Millennial History of Unicorn Mythology from Ancient Times to Contemporary Art

The Musée de Cluny – Musée national du Moyen Âge in Paris is presenting an exhibition titled 'Licornes!' exploring the enduring cultural fascination with unicorns. The show examines representations dating back to 2600 BCE in the Indus Valley and traces the mythical creature's evolution through various civilizations including India, Mesopotamia, and China. It features works from artists such as Sebastian Loscher, Alessandro Varotari, Gustave Moreau, and Niki de Saint Phalle, alongside historical artifacts. The exhibition analyzes how unicorn symbolism has shifted from associations with medicinal properties and virility in ancient texts to Christian purity in medieval times, and finally to contemporary interpretations in LGBTQ+ and pop culture contexts. The exhibition runs from March 10 to July 12, 2026.
