Paris Exhibition Showcases Spanish Baroque Masterpieces from Hispanic Society Collection

The Musée Jacquemart-André in Paris is presenting 'Splendeurs du baroque,' an exhibition featuring approximately fifty Spanish Baroque paintings from the Hispanic Society of America in New York. This marks the first major presentation in France dedicated to this artistic movement from Spain's Golden Age. Curators Guillaume Kientz and Pierre Curie have organized the show, which includes works by prominent artists such as Diego Velázquez, Francisco de Zurbarán, El Greco, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, and Luis de Morales. The exhibition explores the distinct characteristics of Spanish Baroque, which developed at the intersection of Italian and Flemish influences while also incorporating elements from Spain's New World territories. The curators explain that while the Baroque style and the Golden Age period are distinct concepts—the former being an artistic style and the latter a historical era defined by wealth—they became intertwined, with Baroque serving as the dominant visual language of that time. The show is structured thematically, beginning with an introductory section on society and artists, followed by rooms contrasting mystical and humanist sensibilities, examining the spread of Baroque to Latin America, focusing on Velázquez, and concluding with late 17th-century works. The exhibition highlights how Spanish Baroque art, primarily focused on religious subjects, portraiture, and still lifes, differed from its more expansive Italian counterpart and served as a tool for political and religious affirmation. It also features rarely seen works from Latin American artists like Nicolás de Correa and Pérez Holguín, demonstrating the global reach of this aesthetic. The event runs from March 26 to August 2, 2026.
