Paris Exhibition Highlights Barkley L. Hendricks, Influential African-American Painter

A free exhibition in Paris is showcasing the work of Barkley L. Hendricks (1945-2017), an influential African-American artist. Hendricks was among the first artists to prominently depict African-American subjects and express Black pride through striking self-portraits nearly five decades ago. His portrait on a gold background with an afro hairstyle was featured at the opening of the new Studio Museum in Harlem in November. Although highly influential on multiple generations of artists, Hendricks remains relatively unknown in France. The exhibition presents an opportunity to discover his significant contributions to contemporary art.
