Paris Exhibition Explores Henri Matisse's Final Creative Period from 1941-1954

The Centre Pompidou has organized a major exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris focusing on Henri Matisse's late career from 1941 to 1954. The show features approximately 300 works, including the artist's celebrated paper cut-outs, which represent his final artistic achievements. Curator Claudine Grammont notes that this period of Matisse's output is less familiar to Parisian audiences, as previous exhibitions highlighting these works were held at Tate Modern in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The exhibition aims to provide a comprehensive overview of Matisse's production during his final years, which followed a serious health crisis in 1941. Key works on display include maquettes and prints for 'Jazz' (1943-47), drawings from the 'Themes and Variations' series (1941-43), late paintings created in Vence between 1946 and 1948, and designs for the Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence, completed in 1951. Grammont emphasizes the significance of this period, linking it to post-war France and the artist's renewed creative drive after nearly dying. She describes Matisse's studio environment as a symbiotic space where he developed immersive compositions, such as the large-scale piece 'The Parakeet and the Mermaid' (1952). The exhibition runs from March 24 to July 26. Concurrently, several other Matisse exhibitions are opening internationally, including shows at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Acquavella Galleries in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, along with a touring exhibition from the Centre Pompidou appearing in Barcelona.
