Paolo Ulian's CARSICO Marble Washbasin Transforms Traditional Fixture Through Subtractive Process

The CARSICO washbasin, crafted by Paolo Ulian for antoniolupi, reinterprets the classic freestanding marble basin by showcasing the inherent processes of stone hollowing. Beginning with a solid block of botticino marble, Ulian exposes a honeycomb framework that emphasizes negative space as a key design feature. This sculptural piece achieves a remarkable lightness while still reflecting the solidity of stone, allowing light and shadow to dance through the visible drill holes. The washbasin turns bathroom elements into stories of subtraction and weightlessness, highlighting artisanal skill and conceptual insight. Ulian’s design philosophy stems from extensive reflection and hands-on material experimentation, aligning with antoniolupi’s commitment to craftsmanship. The creation process combines CNC routing with manual finishing, capturing every flaw and grout line. The CARSICO washbasin will debut at Salone del Mobile from April 21-26 in Hall 22, Stand A05-A07.
