Paolo Canevari's 'Tutti giù per terra' retrospective opens at MO.CA in Brescia until April 2026

MO.CA – Centro per le Nuove Culture in Brescia presents Paolo Canevari's major retrospective 'Tutti giù per terra,' running until April 19, 2026. Curated by Ilaria Bignotti and Camilla Remondina, the exhibition features twenty paintings and sculptures alongside seven monumental installations, including works like 'Hanging Around' (2006/2008), 'Mamma' (2000), and 'Constellation (Monumenti della memoria)' (2018). Produced by E3 arte contemporanea in collaboration with the Comune di Brescia, the show spans the Spazio espositivo and the Appartamento nobile del Palazzo at Via Moretto 78. At the opening, Canevari performed with his 1990 piece 'Materia Oscura,' a sculpture referencing dark matter in physics to critique societal oppression. His three-decade career explores time and memory through materials like rubber tires and motor oil, transforming symbols of power into new languages. Works such as 'Bucranio' (2006) use animal skulls and tires, while 'Landscape' paintings on paper employ used motor oil to address environmental cruelty. The exhibition includes pieces from 1990 to the present, like 'Lupa romana,' 'Serpente,' and 'Totem,' with support from volunteers and team members Pamela Addessi, Emma Benetti, and Martina Pirovano. Open Wednesday to Sunday from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM with free admission, it marks Brescia's first opportunity to host a comprehensive showcase of Canevari's radical contemporary art.
