Panasonic's new Japanese Microwave (NN-SF57RM) uses a multi-point infrared sensor to measure food surface temperature every tenth of a second, eliminating the need for manual cook time entry. The microwave features a mobile antenna underneath the cooking chamber that directs energy to where it's needed, removing the need for a rotating turntable. The sensor scans 64 locations across the oven to ensure even heating, with tests showing temperature variance within 5 degrees Fahrenheit across the central cooking area for cooks longer than a minute. The microwave's pull-down door and lack of turntable make it spacious despite its 1-cubic-foot capacity. The primary button is a glowing dial labeled Sensor Reheat, which automatically stops cooking when food reaches 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Additional functions include Beverage, Defrost, and Popcorn buttons, as well as preprogrammed scratch-cooking recipes. The sensor cannot see through popcorn bags or covered dishes, and multi-layered bowls may heat unevenly. The microwave costs $249.99 and is available in the US.
