Paa Joe's Fantasy Coffins Transform Parisian Clichés at Galerie Nothing Serious Exhibition

Galerie Nothing Serious in Paris presents 'From Paa Joe to Paaris,' featuring 25 oversized fantasy coffins by Ghanaian artist Paa Joe. The exhibition runs from February 28, 2026, to May 24, 2026, at 6 Rue de Vaucouleurs in the 75011 district. Paa Joe, who gained international recognition in 1989 at Centre Pompidou's 'Magiciens de la terre' exhibition, creates abebu adekai sculptures that reflect the deceased's life in Ga culture. His Paris-themed coffins include a croissant, a Café de Flore cup, an azure blue Renault 4L, a Pouilly-Fumé bottle, a Marlboro pack, and a pigeon. Juliette Seydoux initiated the project after seeing a Mercedes-Benz coffin at the National Museum of Scotland. Paa Joe trained under carpenter Seth Kane Kwei and now works with his son Jacob Tetteh-Ashong, continuing a tradition that began in 1950s Ghana. The exhibition challenges perceptions of death and memory through vibrant, meticulously finished sculptures displayed in the gallery's white space.
