Pa Salieu Discusses BBC Documentary on Post-Prison Life and Music Comeback

British-Gambian rapper Pa Salieu has spoken about a BBC Three documentary that chronicles his return to music following his release from prison. Salieu, who won the BBC's Sound of 2021 award and received a Brit Award nomination, saw his career interrupted when he was sentenced to 33 months in jail for violent disorder and possessing an offensive weapon related to a 2018 altercation. The incident resulted in two stabbings, including the fatal injury of his friend Fidel Glasgow. After serving 16.5 months, Salieu was released on probation and is now rebuilding his life under curfews and travel restrictions. The documentary, titled 'The Trials of Pa Salieu,' follows his preparations for live performances, including a planned appearance at Glastonbury in 2025. In an interview with BBC Radio CWR, Salieu stated that participating in the film was 'the right thing to do,' despite feeling vulnerable, and compared it to how his generation shares personal experiences on social media. He emphasized that everyone has a role in life and must choose to act rightly or wrongly. During his incarceration, Salieu focused on writing, describing reading and writing as his form of freedom, and he believes his mind remained unrestricted even while physically confined. He expressed hope that the documentary would inspire others in similar circumstances and credited his hometown of Coventry for his musical journey, noting he might not have pursued music elsewhere. Salieu indicated that new music would be released soon, stating that creation is within his control.
