Owen Hopkins Calls for Architectural Reinvention of UK Universities Amid Funding Crisis

opinion-review · 2026-10-01

Owen Hopkins wrote an article for Dezeen discussing the tricky financial situation that British universities are dealing with, and how the architecture sector isn’t really stepping up with fresh ideas. He points out that while campuses are lively places, their overall design hasn’t changed much since medieval times, and if we were to design them today, it would look very different. UK universities are seeing a drop in international student enrolments, which is hitting their finances hard and leading to job losses. Hopkins warns that if a major urban university fails, it could really hurt the local economy. He also reminisces about Cedric Price's 1966 Potteries Thinkbelt concept, which aimed to merge education and industry, highlighting that such innovative thinking has been lacking in modern architecture. By the way, he’s the director of the Farrell Centre at Newcastle University.
