Over 100 Venezuelan deportees missing after earthquakes

Following earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday, over 100 deported Venezuelans from the United States have gone missing. A flight from Miami, carrying 146 Venezuelans—including 19 women and seven children—landed in Caracas just hours prior to the quakes, which registered magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5. According to the ICE Flight Monitor, an initiative by Human Rights First, survivors indicated that the deportees were housed in a hotel in La Guaira, one of the most severely affected regions, at the time of the tremors. Lisbeth Portillo, 58, managed to escape the debris with around 20 others and walked 5 km to a National Guard facility to contact family. While she expressed trauma, she also felt thankful for a new opportunity. The total number of missing individuals remains uncertain as rescue operations are ongoing.
