OUJ Architects redesign Taipei apartment for multigenerational living in 40-year-old public housing

OUJ Architects have completed the Apartamento Hu project in Taipei, Taiwan, a 72 m² apartment renovation designed for multigenerational living. The project was managed by Jih-Chiang Hu with contractor Da-Yong, and curated by Miwa Negoro. Photography was handled by Studio Millspace, while materials were supplied by MORTEX and smile materials. Located in a 40-year-old public housing complex, the apartment navigates between two contrasting conditions: the quiet vegetation of the Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab to the south and the bustling commercial boulevard to the north. The renovation addressed significant challenges including low ceilings, an original layout with three small bedrooms that created cramped proportions, metal window grilles, and fixed air conditioning units that obstructed openings and compromised natural light and ventilation. The project originated from a family's post-pandemic decision, with elderly parents and their daughters previously living in southern and northern Taiwan deciding to cohabitate in Taipei to address future care needs. The architectural intervention transforms a constrained space into a functional multigenerational home.
